At the Rio Tinto Boron Site, I served as the Electrical Engineering Intern to Mobile Maintenance Group or better known as the Truck shop at Rio Tinto Boron.

Rio Tinto Boron is a borate surface mine located in Boron, CA. Which is just about 130 miles north of Los Angles, CA. This site runs 24/7 nonstop operations. This means all critical parts of the mine are required to be manned 24/7.

The Mobile Maintenance Group is a critical part of the mine. They keep all mobile vehicles maintained and serviced. The vehicles the group services include Haul Trucks, Dozers, Loader, Sholvels, and all lightweight vehicles on-site.

My Role

Electrical Engineering Intern

My role as Electrical Engineering Intern to the Mobile Maintenace Group saw me responsible for a couple of different projects. These projects include the Front Axial G-Force Project, Upgrading the Middle Shop Crane, many other short-term projects. Overall my purpose was to improve the day-to-day operations of the Moblie Maintenance Group in whatever way possible.

Front Axial Geforce Project

The Problem & Goal

The Front Axial of Haul Trucks was having small, and large cracking on them. This could lead to critical structural failure of the haul trucks if left untreated. (The Haul Trucks are responsible for move all the material in and out of the mine.) My goal was to understand the cracking, and develop asystem that could allow the group to detect or give insight of what force the front axial was experiencing during operation.

Solution

The solution was the development of a High G-Force Event Monitoring System that would log the High G-Force Events the Front Axial experienced and the GPS location/time of the events. These Data Points where then plotted on a Heat map of the mine, updating as the system collect more data.
